Partly because, being the 3rd child in short succession we already have a mountain of different toys, everything from dolls and pushchairs, to play kitchens and train sets. We wanted to buy her something she would really love but we really were at a loss for what to buy her.
That’s when her key worker at nursery mentioned how much fun she had on a three-wheeled scooter at nursery. How determined she had being to learn, and how even when she struggled and fallen off she climbed straight back on and had another go.
We have two-wheeled scooters which are a little two tricky for Amy to manoeuver, but a three-wheeled scooter is perfect. So Santa brought Amy a Frozen themed three-wheel scooter.
During the week, (when I am feeling brave) Amy brings the scooter on the school run, and she kindly lets her her big sister Lily have a go on the way back.
I love the way that Amy turns to glance at me and smile when she shares, I always try catch her eye and let her know that it’s a good and kind thing to do.
In true toddler fashion she decides she wants it back moments later. Lily only needs a few seconds however to zoom into the distance, she can really cover some distance.
James had a turn, calmly explaining that it didn’t matter that it was a Frozen scooter. I am proud of him for this, a year or so ago, out of the blue, he cried when we gave him a ‘girl coloured cup’. We didnt push it, but we explained in a child friendly way that colours don’t really belong to gender. A few times since he has talked to me about gender-neutral choices he has made, and I am really pleased that he can talk things through with us.
I don’t think I make a very good gender-neutral parent, we have pink dolls and our train set is blue… but i am not too concerned as long as they are happy. I want them to be able to make their own choices, but I think its important they understand and accept other people’s feelings and choices too.
I really can’t believe that my little lady can use her scooter so well, when only a few short months ago she was still unsteady on her feet. Her determination to succeed is definitely a strong part of her character. She is passionate and fiery at times, but at the same time so caring and thoughtful.
Her vocabulary has exploded in the last few weeks and I love hearing her choice of words and how she describes things, at the moment everything is ‘awesome’. I feel so lucky to be a mummy and watch her character grow and develop each day.
